Ralph Kent 1939 - 2007

It is with a solemn heart that I inform you that Imagineer Ralph Kent has passed away this morning in his home in Orlando, Fl. He designed promotional materials for attractions like The Enchanted Tiki Room and training materials for the 1964-65 World’s Fair attractions. Later he became the Director of Walt Disney Imagineering East and a Corporate Trainer for the Disney Design Group. He will be missed.

Ralph Kent was known as "The Keeper of the Mouse". While Walt Disney may have created the character, it was Ralph Kent who was responsible for making Mickey Mouse the "iconic global image" that it is today. An icon is an image or representation of something held in near religious reverence, or even worshiped. Mickey Mouse is exactly that -- a character that children round the world have revered and sometimes "worshiped" for decades.

This is highly ironic given that Ralph Kent was one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Jehovah's Witnesses are the religious group generally known for their refusal to salute or pledge the American Flag, or even stand for the playing of the National Anthem. Jehovah's Witnesses refuse to "worship" the American Flag because the WatchTower Society teaches JWs that the American Flag is an "icon".

The WatchTower Society cites Exodus 20:4 which prohibits the making of "any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath," and points to the "stars" on the American Flag.

I'll leave it to the reader's common sense as to which "likeness" has received the most reverence from Americans over the past 70 years -- the stars on the flag, or Mickey Mouse.

Another Bible verse comes to mind. I believe Jesus made some comment about Pharisees "straining out gnats", all the while they were gulping down a huge Mouse -- err Camel.

This article also failed to mention that Ralph Kent also designed Christmas ornaments. I'll assume most readers are aware of the JWs' teachings about "Christmas", and readers can decipher for themselves the "irony" regarding a JW designing ornaments for Christmas Trees.

How sad that Mr Anonymous would try to question the character of Mr Kent. I love all things Disney and when investigating the life of Mr Kent I found out that he became one of Jehovah's Witness' much later in life. Obviously after he worked at Disney.

If Mr Kent's early career is to be compared with his later life, I have a secret. Mr Anonymous, when he was 2 years old, pooped in his diaper! Yes, it's true. I don't see how he can live that down.

Also, who in their right mind would compare Mickey Mouse to the American Flag? That's just Goofy!

My name is Robert and I have a season pass to Disneyland.

Cheers

Mr anonymous posted the same post on another site sent from a Gary Keir. He sent that post shortly after Mr Kent's passing which insulted his family. I suggest that if Mr anonymous has an ax to grind with anything that he does it elsewhere other then over the grave of a good and decent man.Robert, your response was spot on.
